My Best Dressed of 2011 List

1) Wow I cant believe its already been a whole year since I last posted my best dressed of the year list. Last year the number one spot went to Coco Rocha in Zac Posen Spring 2008 RTW, she won because she wore that dress with all the drama and did not let the dress wear her. This year I have chosen Uma Thurman to top the list in this stunning white feathered Versace Fall 2011 RTW gown. When this gown first walked the runway in February I wished for Kate Beckinsale to wear it so initially when I saw Uma wearing it at the opening ceremony of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival (where she was on the jury). After the initial disappointment that my wish did not come true I started to fall in love with the look. From the emerald Chopard earrings to the way she worked the gown, to her strappy Jimmy Choo sandals. In comparison to a lot of other gowns this year nothing could live up to this including the nine others on the list below.
2) If to those of you who voted for the Readers Choice Best Dressed of the Year, will recognize all the winners of a spot on my list except this look from Iman, because this walked the red carpet post the date of the 100 images that you guys voted on. So why would I add this gown to the list? Because one of my favorite red carpet icons (yes she is she received an award from the CFDA about it) and my favorite Zac Posen Spring 2012 RTW gown and the fact that she worked it and BAM an opening in my best dressed list was created.
3) Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took the red carpet world by storm this year as she made her big screen debut as the token 'Hot Girl' in the film "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Rosie who made a name for herself originally as a Victorias Secret angel, so Rosie stuck to the norm of short and sexy. Now Rosie gave us a lot of sexy (via her attitude and presence) but never did she give short. For the Berlin premiere of the film Rosie gave me my favorite look from her promotional tour. This Naeem Khan Fall 2011 RTW gown meets all of my red carpet love requirements. 1) It's a gown 2) It's crystal encrusted and 3) It has a sweeping train. I love the whole look and the fact that Rosie knows good and she is going to make whoever looks at this photo of her know she looks good.
4) I was extremely upset that there were not more pictures of Fan Bingbing at the Cannes Film Festival Premiere of "Wu Xia" because the stunning Chinese actress and L'Oreal Paris China spokesmodel (who attends the red carpet events just to bring elegance and grace to the red carpets at the festival) because she is wearing my favorite gown from the Atelier Versace Spring 2012 Couture collection. If there were images of the fullness of the gown when she stopped to pose then I believe that this might have made number two but because I cant tell if the shape was upheld or not I have to give her number four. A beige clutch and diamond bracelet completed this look.
5) When Zhang Ziyi took to the red carpet at the Rome Film Festival premiere of "Love For Life" wearing a stunning Christian Dior Resort 2011 ice blue ball gown. I had given up any hope of seeing any of the stunning ball gowns from this collection the red carpet after awards season because they would be way to out of season, so when Zhang graced the carpet in this gown (which had made its runway debut a year and a half before) I leaped for joy. Zhang kept the styling simple adding a matching ice blut box clutch, and simple drop diamond earrings. Hair pulled back into an elegant up do completed this best dressed look.
6) Nina Dobrev had never wowed me before on the red carpet but when she stepped out at the 2011 Emmy Awards, she took my breath away. The star of the CW's hit sensation "The Vampire Diaries" looked like a veteran red carpet diva wearing a Donna Karan Resort 2012 mermaid gown that was custom made in red for the actress. She didn't let down with the styling either wearing a gunmetal 19th century Fred Leighton necklace and a gunmetal Judith Leiber clutch. The hair pulled over one shoulder also looked 100% amazing.
7) Zoe Saldana was on hand at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of "The Tree of Life." The actress who attended the premiere of the film just for the sake of donning a haute couture dress custom made for her by Armani Prive and looking stunning. Do not take that as a complaint because I am doing anything but that as if I was complaining Zoe would not be on the list and someone else would be. Zoe completed her best dressed look with Nicolas Kirkwood peep-toe pumps and Neil Lane jewelry.
8) Rachel McAdams is becoming one of my favorite red carpet divas and this is just one reason why. When I saw this Marchesa Fall 2011 RTW in the original collection I never would have thought that I would ever see this gown on the red carpet, I wasn't even sure that I wanted to because there was no life breathed into the dress and made it not seem like it would not make an impact when if was to be worn the the red carpet. Well I will say that I was wrong, I fell in love the moment that I saw the image of Rachel on the famous stairs at the opening ceremony premiere of her film "Midnight in Pairs" at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Rachel let her gown do all the talking by pairing the dress with just a simple pair of gold Casadei pointy toe pumps, retro waves, and neutral makeup.
9) Anne Hathaway looked all the part of the Hollywood style goddess that she is as she took to the stage in her first look, a Givenchy Fall 2009 Couture gown, at the 2011 Oscars. This gown has to be one of my favorite Anne Hathaway looks ever, I am so excited that Rachel Zoe decided to pull this gown from the Givenchy archives. I let out a gasp when the screen showing the opening montage was raised and Anne came through the fog in this stunning gown. I am also glad that she didn't overload this gown with lots of diamonds because that would have completely ruined this entire looks.
10) I love this look from Lady Gaga. Here she is seen leaving the studio where she recorded the song and video "Lady is a Tramp" with the legendary Tony Bennett. The stunning pop star wore the exact same Tom Ford Fall 2011 RTW gown in the video. I love that she took the evening gown and is wearing it in the daylight on the sidewalk. How she styled the look with just her aqua hair and Chanel sunglasses make this look effortless. I will say I am not Tom Fords biggest fan but this is one of the times that I am in love with the collection.

Best Dressed Man of 2011: Ryan Gosling

I really don't feel like I can say anything but thank you to Ryan Gosling who is the only man on the red carpet that I am actually interested in seeing.

Most Disappointing: Michelle Williams

I had high hopes for Michelle Williams but I feel that ever since Heath Leger (her long time boyfriend) died that Michelle has been in a bit of a style rut. I wish that she would follow this site and that she would take my advice. Its not always that she doeskin choose amazing pieces, I just feel that she either styles it incorrectly or she just doesn't breath the life that the look calls for. Hope you do better for me next year Michelle so that I can give you the Most Improved Award next year

Best Dressed Couture Designer of 2011: Elie Saab

Elie Saab holds his title (if you followed my old site LoveIt or HateIt a year ago you may recall that he won last years award as well). Now this does not come as a huge surprise to me as Elie is my favorite designer to see on the red carpet and if celebs would only wear his designs on the red carpet I could die tomorrow a happy man.

Best Dressed Ready to wear Designer of 2011: Versace

I was overjoyed that when I came to do the Best Dressed Ready to Wear Brand Award that someone beat out Marchesa for the first time in this blogs history and I am glad it is Versace because I love this brand, If I could live in just one brand it would have to be Versace. Now there may only be a few looks but remember that I came up with these awards based on a complication of the looks from all the awards and then other looks that I had nominated. I had over 500 looks that were put into consideration, and took a lot to narrow it down to 100 for the reader choice poll and was almost impossible to choose just 10 to be my best dressed list.

Red Carpet Diva of 2011: Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger, haven't seen her recently on the red carpet but at the beginning of the year it was like a week didn't pass without Miss Kruger making some sort of red carpet appearance. Now she never appeared during awards season or had a film to promote so when she just showed up looking fabulous I knew I was in love and that she would most likely win this award. Florence Welch was close but ultimately Diane beat her out and won the title. Congrats Diane and here is to a swift red carpet return next year!!!!

Best Dressed Teen of 2011: Hailee Steinfeld

Hailee Steinfeld made her debut on the big screen in the Oscar nominated film "True Grit" and earned herself a best supporting actress nomination as well, so naturally she was seen everywhere this awards season. She wore things that suited the fourteen year old girl that she is, of course she had a few miss steps (especially in her Miu Miu spokesmodel phase just because the collection is to old for her) but ultimately she prevailed wearing cute designs from Prada, Marchesa, Prabal Gurung, Chloe, and Versace. I hope to see more of Hailee as she slowly becomes a young adult and eventually a woman.

Stand By Your Man Award: Nicole Kidman

It seemed that no matter where Keith Urban stepped out to promote himself or accept an award Nicole Kidman was either attached to him or not to far. And I will say that I feel Nicole looks her best not when she walks the red carpet promoting herself but when she is with Keith. Is this just a publicity stunt to get more women to know who he is because they read more fashion sites and if she looks better and is placed on best dressed lists and she is only photographed with him that more people will notice him? Well I really don't care about why she does it but I am glad she does because it proves to me that she has not lost her mojo on the red carpet but it still there. My only plea to her is to put the same amount of effort into her looks when she is just on the red carpet alone.

Best Street Style of 2011: Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek receives her second award of the year with Best Street Style of 2011, I sort of give this as an extenuation of her Best Brand Ambassador award as she only wore brands that are in the Gucci Group. The first look we have is a modified for production Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2011 dress. Salma picked up the yellow details in the dress with a Balenciaga Papier A4 Tote and matchy purple Balenciaga sandals finish this stunning head-to-toe Balenciaga look.
After an appearancce on The Late Show with David Letterman, Salma was photographed outside the Ed Sullivan theater in NYC wearing a red Gucci Resort 2012 coat paired with Sergio Rossi pumps.
After landing at LAX, Salma was caught by the paparazzi wearing a Gucci Resort 2012 tank top under a black blazer and back jeans. Salma carried a Yves St Laurent ChYc Cabas Tote
And Salma gave me my second favorite street style look (the Balenciaga was my favorite) when she attended the French Open wearing a Yves St Laurent Spring 2011 RTW Skirt and a Yves St Laurent orange blouse. She paired the ensemble with her Yves St Laurent ChYc Cabas tote and Yves St Laurent wedges.

Best Promotional Tour: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for Trasformers: Dark of the Moon

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was virtually unknown at the beginning of 2011 and after her acting debut in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and the promotional tour that came with it has made her famous the world over for more than being a pretty face walking the glitter runway for Victoria's Secret.

Risk Taker of 2011: Rihanna

Rihanna looked amazing this year as she found her balance on the fine line between way over the top and glamorous. Now when most people think glamor they think of old hollywood actresses like Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, or Betty Davis, but Rihanna took the glam factor to the edge and made herself stand out at each venue she arrived at.

Ones to Watch in 2012 Award: Andrea Risenborugh, Elizabeth Olsen, and Felicity Jones

Couldn't choose just one of these stunning girls. I have heard awards season buzz for all of them and I hope to see them on multiple red carpets over the span of awards season and the year.

Thankful for Color in 2011 Award: Angelina Jolie

In the 2010 LoveIt or HateIt End of Year Fashion Awards (LoveIt or HateIt is my old blog for those of you who don't know) I gave Angelina Jolie the hoping for color award and who knows maybe she read my post and decided to follow it because she busted out the colors this year. The picture above is in chronological order and that is how I am going to explain each look. The first look from AJ was this stunning emerald green Atelier Versace gown at the 2011 Golden globes, then she wore chocolate brown at the Cannes Film Festival Premiere of The Tree of Life, for the LA Premiere of The Tree of Life AJ Stepped out in a red Jenny Packham gown, wearing a peach colored Elie Saab Spring 2011 RTW gown Angelina glided down the red carpet for the closing ceremony of the Sarajevo Film Festival, and last but not least for the Japanese premiere of Moneyball Angelina Jolie donned a simple Atelier Versace dress in red.
I just have to applaud Angelina for only wearing black twice this year one from Vivienne Westwood for the Toronto Film Festival premiere of Moneyball and then Michel Kors at the Kung Fu Panda 2 LA Premiere.

Best Dressed Brand Ambassador of 2011: Salma Hayek

Now this post may confuse people because there are multiple brands being showcased in the Best Brand Ambassador Award Post. Well this is because all of these designers are part of the Gucci Group, which is owned by Salma's husband, François-Henri Pinault. The Gucci Group consists of Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Yves St Laurent. She wears as many of these brands throughout the year as possible. For the New York Screening of her film Puss In Boots, Salma choose to wear a dress from the Alexander McQueen Resort 2012 collection. The color looks stunning on Salma and the silhouette is amazing for her.
Of course Salma was on hand at the 2011 Met Gala, which honored the late Alexander McQueen. Salma looked amazing and goddess like in her custom made Alexander McQueen gown. I love the drapery and the rosette embellishment on the hip.
To promote Puss in Boots in Los Angeles, Salma donned the first look from the Bottega Veneta Spring 2012 RTW collection. I love Salma in brown as it does amazing things for her skin tone.
Salma donned another Bottega Veneta Spring 2012 RTW dress for the Puss In Boots Mexican Photocall.
She started her promotions for Puss in Boots all the way back in May during the opening of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival wearing a Gucci Fall 2011 RTW leather dress and floral bolero and paired with matching Yves St Laurent pumps
This was the look that really said First Lady of the Gucci Group. Salma attended the ‘Il Mondo Vi Appartiene’ Dinner during the 54th International Art Biennale at Fondazione Cini in Venice, Italy. The latin beauty looked stunning in a custom made burgundy beaded one shouldered cocktail dress that she paired with a matching Gucci bolero sweater
Salma is one of the few people who have been lucky enough to wear Gucci Premiere, which is the couture collection from Gucci. The actress who debuted the Gucci Premiere line at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, and again she wore another gown from the line at this years opening ceremony.
And for the Gucci Award For Women In Cinema Gala during the Venice Film Festival, of course Salma was on hand and looking every part the stunning First Lady she should wearing another Gucci Premiere gown.

Best Dressed Foreigner: Florence Welch

This is the second award for Florence Welch this year from me. First she got Queen of Couture and now she is Best Dressed Forigner. Even the looks that are not couture are made and worked like a couture gown. This is one thing that I absolutely love about Florence she brings that same effortless sense to each of her looks weather they be Elie Saab or Valentino Haute Couture or something she purchased off the rack at a boutique. She always looks put together and stylish.

Best Stage Costume of 2011: Rihanna at the 2011 Grammy Awards

There was really no competition for Rihanna to win this award because no one was daring enough to try and top this, the only possible competition for this award was Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli couture, but still Rihanna came out on top. This is a gown that I would never see outside the pages of Vogue but when the camera cut to Rihanna wearing this stunning design my jaw just dropped. This gown from the floral inspired (obviously look at the gown it looks like a giant flower) Christian Dior Fall 2010 Couture collection looked absolutely stunning and Rihanna is definitely wearing the dress and the dress is not wearing her. You can see the video of the performance below.

Best Dressed Event Host of the Year: Anne Hathaway at the 2011 Academy Awards

Anne Hathaway was the co-host of the 2011 Academy Awards with James Franco. Anne had 8 costume changes wearing lots of custom made clothing and haute couture. To create all of her looks for that evening Anne enlisted long time friend, critically acclaimed, and reality television sensation Rachel Zoe to help her look her absolute best for the ceremony. To start the evening Anne walked the red carpet wearing a stunning signature red Valentino Fall 2002 Couture bustle gown accentuated with roses. Anne who walked the red carpet with long time pal Mr. Valentino himself finds herself lucky because the Valentino archives pre-dating when Mr. Valentino left as head designer have been sealed but because she and Rachel Zoe are both great friends with Mr. Valentino he sent this gown to Anne. She accessorized this look with Roger Vivier shoes and Tiffany & Co. diamonds which she wore throughout the evening with each look.
When the screen lifted and through the fog James and Anne, wearing this stunning medieval couture style Givenchy Spring 2009 Couture gown, I swooned. The drama of the gown paired with the perfect accessories and the fog that that came out of just made a magical moment. This was one of the highlight moments from the evening and is the first look I think of when I look back at the telecast, just for the shear drama that was brought when she arrived on the stage. She knew she looked stunning and it showed in the confidence that the stunning actress exuded.
To sing an original number Annie donned a custom made Lanvin tuxedo that she paired with custom made Brian Atwood crystal encrusted pumps. I love that this look was unexpected, I would have guessed that Anne was going to wear couture gowns all night long but when she graced the stage in this tux I was thoroughly impressed, and the pairing of the statement shoe with the classic menswear inspired design makes it even better. Another great moment of the show came here whilst Anne was wearing a menswear inspired tuxedo, James Franco came out in a reproduction of the famous pink strapless gown with the large bow that Marylin Monroe wore in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blonde in the number "Diamond are a Girls Best Friend."
Now of all the looks that Anne wore this custom made Vivienne Westwood gown was my least favorite and was the only gown that I did not put up for the Best Dressed Award. I didn't think like the shape, the color against Annie's skin tone, the hairstyle, or the Tiffany & Co. necklace paired with the dress. I feel that this dress is stuck in the 1980's and should have been left there.
Now this gilver (a mix of gold and silver) flapper beaded Oscar de la Renta Fall 2011 RTW gown gave the best spoken wardrobe related moment of the night. When Anne came on in the gown she said, "I love being able to host awards shows, because I can wear gowns that do this" and proceeded to shimmy and make the beaded fringe fly (as pictured). I love that Anne loves to have fun with fashion and glad she took the moment to give that line that I believe will go gown in fashion history.
Now for those of you who followed my old blog you may remember that this exact Atelier Versace Spring 2011 Couture gown was on my wish list for Anne to wear during the ceremony, so as you can imagine I did a little bit of a fan girl scream when I saw that my wish had come true at the venue that I had wished it to be at. While watching The Rachel Zoe Project I found out that me and Rachel were on the same page about this gown because the both of us when the entire Atelier Versace collection was shown both wanted Anne to wear it. It was a gift from god that Anne got this dress and who knows maybe he saw my wish because about a week before the ceremony the Versace VIP Concierge called up Rachel and asked her if it was too late to send her this gown. I am glad that she said that it wasn't as this made my night watching her wear this gown.
Of the night there were two gowns that I cant believe I fell in love with. This is the first. When I saw the Armani Prive Spring 2011 Couture collection, I found that most of it was un-wearable to anyone outside of an editorial standpoint (this gown included). But I think what sold me the gown was that instead of wearing the red runway version of this gown Rachel Zoe had it crafted in this stunning blue version. Had this been the gown that she had worn on the red carpet, I might be saying something different. But I think that the blue dress paired with the black setting and all the lights bouncing off the shimmering fabric made this futuristic style gown come to life and look amazing against Anne's skin color.
And this Tom Ford gown that is from the Fall 2011 RTW collection (didn't know that when I edited the picture) was the second gown that I suprisingly liked. I have not been a huge fan of Tom Fords and I can honestly say I did snicker a little bit when his promise to dress a best actress nomoniee did not happen, but he did dress Anne in this stunning gown with crystals placed that remind me of broken glass. Whilest wearing this gown Anne participated in the second goosbump moment which was when all the winners, the hosts, and a childrens choir sang the Oscar winning song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" at the shows close. So here is a big congratulations to Anne Hathaway and I guess to Rachel Zoe as well for creating my favorite event host's look.

Best Stage Style: Celine Dion

This is not an award that I would ever have thought I would be awarding to ballad singing superstar Celine Dion, I thought it would have been Florence Welch, Rihanna, Beyonce, or Katy Perry. Well seeing that Celine costumed her concert at The Coliseum at Cesar's Palace in Las Vegas with haute couture from Elie Saab, custom made gowns from Atelier Versace & Armani Prive, and daring Balmain ensembles. Each of her looks was paired with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. For her performance during the In Memoriam section at the 2011 Academy Awards (where she wore Armani Prive on the red carpet) donned a draped strapless gown from Elie Saab. As well as when she performed with Andrea Bocelli and the New York Philharmonic she wore a stunning Versace Fall 2011 RTW gown that is couture worthy (see the video bellow).

Queen of Couture: Florence Welch

Florence Welch really started to catch my attention at the end of 2010 wearing lots of Elie Saab Couture and other amazing designers. So I kept my eye on her through the 2011 year and well lets just say that she won this award in two months. Her First look of this year was when she performed at the Marquee Nightclub in The Cosmopolitan VIP Opening Party in Las Vegas. The singer opted to mix her signature folk style with the glitz and glamor of Studio 54 to create the perfect look fore Las Vegas wearing an Elie Saab Fall 2010 Couture jumpsuit that is 100% hand beaded.
The next time Florence stepped out she was spotted in Park City, Utah at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival where she performed at an after-party hosted by Bing. She choose another earthy colored look from the Elie Saab Fall 2010 Couture collection. This look consisted of a gown with bat-wing sleeves and embellished silk chiffon.
Just weeks after the Bing party Florence stepped out on the red carpet at the 2011 Grammy Awards. This time the performer did not choose an Elie Saab gown for the red carpet but an Avant-Garde gown with a bold bright orange pop of color on her back from the Givenchy Spring 2011 Couture. To me she is one of the few people (the only other I can think of that actually worked a look from this collection was Liv Tyler at the 2011 Met Ball) that had the confidence to wear a look from this collection and I think that she looked stunning.
But Florence did not stay out of Elie Saab for to long because in the opening number honoring the music legend Aretha Franklin, she donned a nude embellished gown from the Spring 2010 Couture collection. This gown is elegant and I love it on her but I could also see a head of state wearing it to a formal gala gathering. But the dress was perfect for Florence who didn't want the focus to be on the dress but on her voice and tribute. I also applaud her because Yolanda Adams, Martina McBride, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson all wore black ensembles, so while her gown wasn't statement making it was all in the same sentence.
And just two weeks after her appearance on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards Florence made her way down the red carpet at the 2011 Academy Awards, where she performed her Oscar nominated song "If I Rise" from the Oscar nominated film "127 Hours" with composer A.R. Rahman. So for the red carpet Florence chose an elegant yellow gown with long lace sleeves and a pleated tiered skirt. Now this gown is something that looks absolutely stunning on Florence and is 100% her personality and style. Some critics said this dress was too matronly and should have been worn by the like of Annette Bening or Melissa Leo but I think that Florence was the customer that Valentino had in mind when they designed this dress for the Spring 2011 Couture collection.
And just a few hours later Florence changed from her yellow gown to a nude gown with a black chiffon overlay embellishes with white and light pink flowers. I love this look as it is not anything that we had ever seen Florence wear up to this point an the fact that she rocked it made it that much better
